[Tragos’ conversation with Kaden about Aphrodite goes about as badly as Tragos predicted it would. He struggles to impress the seriousness of the situation on Kaden, who’s sleep deprived from trying to catch up on homework and who can’t reconciliate an Aphrodite who would attack someone in the street with the Aphrodite who’d been so kind to him and Marcie. Tragos shouts trying to get his point across, his fear across, and Kaden shouts right back. It's a mess.
“Maybe she just wants to look after the baby!” Kaden yells, turning in the doorway with his hand on the door, poised to slam. “Maybe the kid would be lucky to have two mothers who can’t die!”
When he storms out, he slams every door as he passes it, even stopping at the car in the driveway to open the door and slam that, too.
Tragos doesn’t go after him because the raw hurt in Kaden’s voice isn’t something he knows how to soothe. The boys never talk about their mother, but Tragos can see the ghost of her ripping at Kaden today.
Kaden doesn’t know where to go or what to do. He puts a lot of distance between himself and his house very quickly because if he doesn’t run full tilt something is gonna catch up with him and he doesn’t wanna hang around and find out what it is. There’s a freedom of thought in running this fast, and for a while that’s the only thing he needs to know.
He ends up in McDonalds because it’s open and familiar and bright, those arches like a beacon. It’s not the one he took Melpomene to but it might as well be. Kaden thinks about her and about goddesses fighting over a baby and still can’t get over it enough to see the problem, kinda blinded by the fact that the kid’s so wanted, before its born, even. And by two rich, generous goddesses, who’ve both shown him unexpected kindness.
He takes his tray of food to a corner so he doesn’t have to look over his shoulder for anything, and pulls out his phone. His stomach is squirming and he tries to calm it with a deep drink of cold raspberry coke, slowly and uncertainly typing out a message.
He stares at his phone a long time before he finally decides, and sends it to both of them. Separately. ]
Tragos told me about your fight. I hope you're ok.

[Kaden winces at his words. Oh no. No he can't address a goddess like that. Shit, shitshitshit, he thinks, and not for the first time today. Not for the first time this week. Chances were there'd be more thoughts of shitshitshit to come, too!
Augh. Okay. Right. Where to start. Kaden stares at the screen for a bit (it's cracked, it's his old screen, but at least its familiar?) and then opens up a new tab and Googles some formal writing tips, some different ways to address people... like her.
There are two problems here. One: there are no people like her. Two: all the suggestions sound like lies, and Kaden learned a long time ago that if you're going to lie to someone, you make everything sound as close to the truth as possible. And truth is, he doesn't know how to address her and he's caught somewhere between awkward and awe-filled and, well, maybe that's the tone he should go with.]
[Yes, that sounds okay, he thinks, and lets out a sigh that tries to untangle some of the anxiety knotted all through his chest. At least this next bit is genuine, completely, utterly, unbelievably genuine.]
Marcie is so so lucky to have you as a step mom, and I wanna say thank you, even though that feels a little weird to say thank you for being so incredible to your step-daughter but, thank you for being so incredible to your step daughter. Thank you for helping to save her life. Can I offer you something? What would you like?
[He'd thought about a little shrine, but the idea of a shrine to her in a place like the Hole felt really disrespectful. It was too dirty here, too broken. She was so beautiful, she should have something beautiful, but Kaden didn't think there was anything he could do or make or even think that would come close to the kind of beauty she was used to.]
Speaking of... gifts and things, I thought I better tell you that the new phone you gave me got stolen at school, so if you see me posting any things that aren't looking as good, that's why, and thank you so much for being so generous and sorry for not looking after it better, I should've done, it's so shitty, and... yeah, I'm just really sorry.
[He thinks that sounds okay. Well no, it doesn't sound okay. But he thinks that's the tone he needs to hit. Some of its true: he is sorry he doesn't have the phone anymore, and he is grateful... but yeah, like he learned a long time ago, you gotta sneak in the lies all disguised up in truth.]
